Celebrations in Bottrop
Clubhouse in Eigen, garden house in Kirchhellen or a hall at the colliery site: every room carries music differently, so I first ask where you're celebrating. An industrial hall, a ski slope, a museum garden, a spoil tip with a steel structure and a theme park: your birthday in Bottrop can take place here, and for each address I note what I look out for with the technology.
How much equipment I pack depends on the room: a clubhouse asks for something different than an industrial hall. So tell me first where you are celebrating and with how many people.
If only a small circle is coming, I carry my compact set in on my own and only need a socket within reach. After 40 minutes everything is connected and tested before you welcome your first guests.
The venue's website lists birthdays and anniversaries as occasions. The hall from 1911 was converted into an event location in 2001; menu or buffet, stage technology, seating and decoration are handled by the organiser. You'll find out there how many guests fit in; after that I plan the desk and speakers.
According to the operator, group packages run on the 640-metre slope and in the beer garden, explicitly including children's birthdays, mostly as an all-inclusive package. The hall and beer garden can be hired privately. You clarify with the sales team what music is possible there, and I then plan power and setup.
The museum shows Josef Albers, who was born in Bottrop in 1888, and has a sculpture park with works by Max Bill and Donald Judd. Only the museum can say whether rooms are available for private parties. Once you have a confirmation from them, we'll discuss music that respects the space.
Since 1995 the steel structure has towered above the spoil tip, with platforms at 18, 32 and 38 metres and 387 steps to climb. A party doesn't happen there, but it works as a meeting point before a celebration nearby. How you organise a group is something you clarify with the city.
The park opened on 30 June 1996 as Warner Bros. Movie World, covers around 45 hectares and hosts the Halloween Horror Festival in October. Whether and how a birthday can be held there is something the operator can tell you; for a party afterwards I plan the setup and programme.

I learned the craft in the nightclub, and private and corporate events followed later, now over 1450. Rigid playlists achieve little; a party thrives on someone watching the room and choosing the next track with feeling.

With the booking you get my mobile number, because a lot gets sorted fastest on WhatsApp. About a week before the party we talk about favourite songs, no-gos and the schedule.
I'm in the room before the first guests arrive: setup takes about 40 minutes, followed by the sound check. Whatever the venue still needs to know, I sort out with you or the management, so nobody has to go searching on the night.
Calm lounge music plays as guests arrive, so that they start talking. For you as the birthday guest of honour I choose a track of your own, and likewise for special moments.
Programme items get their music too: quiet during the meal, a microphone for speeches, fitting pieces for games, surprises and the cutting of the cake.
As soon as people start dancing, I take over completely, watch the guests and keep adjusting the set until the last song has faded.

Setup takes about 40 minutes, the system needs roughly 2.5 by 1.5 metres, and I clear up myself after the party. About 2.5 m of width and 1.5 m of depth are enough, and under normal conditions (car close to the setup spot, no stairs or lifts) setup takes around 40 minutes.
You can add lighting, a photo station, live music and an audio guest book if you need them, and I take care of the coordination.

To begin with, a photo of the place with the nearest socket and the number of guests is enough for me. My set is compact, and if you are celebrating outdoors we will plan for rain together.
Just send me the tracks in advance. I put them where you want them, and afterwards I carry on mixing with music that the younger guests enjoy too.
Yes, I bring two wireless microphones. For speeches I fade the music down, and for singing along I choose songs that you and your guests know.

Tell me the date, place and approximate number of guests, then we collect what belongs to your evening: albums from your youth, songs to sing along to, tracks that must never play. Whatever comes up spontaneously I pick up, as long as it fits the mood.

Transparency
A whole evening of nothing but Schlager and Ballermann, hour after hour? A few big crowd-pleasers in between, when the mood calls for it, belong to a good birthday party for me. Building a whole evening on them alone isn't my thing, though. I'm just as little the right person for non-stop techno sets without any contact with the crowd, for rigid request lists that get worked through from top to bottom, or for festival formats with several stages. There are other DJs who can do exactly that and love it, nothing against them, it's simply not my speciality.
My craft is mixing live for guests who want an evening with a feel for the moment: clean transitions, the right track at the right time, instead of just pressing play. That's why I'd rather tell you beforehand what I don't do than have you disappointed on the night.
